Dr Georgia Dawson of the University of Melbourne and Murdoch Children's Research Institute spoke to Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Northwest Queensland radio about the MHiPS initiative, outlining its beginnings in Victoria and recent expansion to Queensland.

'It has changed the nature of conversations in schools about mental health.'

Building on learnings from statewide implementation in Victoria, a co-designed, adapted version of the MHiPS model will be piloted with nine schools from Mount Isa’s Educational Precinct. MHiPS embeds trained mental health and wellbeing leaders in schools to build the capacity of teachers to recognise and respond to student mental health and wellbeing needs and reduce mental health stigma.

Dr Georgia Dawson is a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Education, University of Melbourne and an Honorary Research Associate at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute. Dr Dawson led the development of the MHiPS professional learning program and continues to lead co-design and adaptation of the learning program for new contexts.
